What is the text behind subject effect?

Most caption tools put the words on top of the video. With text behind the subject, the person stays in front and the words pass behind them, so the text looks like part of the scene. It is the depth look you see in high-end edits and music videos.

Other editors make you build it clip by clip: select a few seconds, cut the person out, drag the text to where you want it, then do the next clip, and the next. Sleepy Motion does the whole video from one upload, captions, timing and sound effects included.

How to put text behind a person in a video

  1. Upload your video

An MP4 up to 150MB, vertical or horizontal, up to 30 seconds (2 minutes on the Agency plan). Someone speaking works best: the text comes from what they say, or paste your own script.

  2. Sleepy masks your subject

On every frame, automatically: a person, a pet or a product. The words are transcribed, timed to the speech and placed behind the subject, in the clean parts of the frame.

  3. Pick a style and download

Choose the fonts, colors and how the text blends with the video, or let Sleepy pick. Sound effects are added for you. Download in 1080p.

Questions

How do I put text behind a person in a video?

Upload your video to Sleepy Motion. It cuts the person out on every frame, transcribes what they say and places the animated words behind them, so they appear in front of the text. No masking by hand and no timeline.

Do I need After Effects or a video editor?

No. In an editor you build the effect clip by clip: select a few seconds, cut the subject out, drag the text into place, and repeat for the whole video. Sleepy Motion does all of it from one upload, with every word timed to the speech, in a few minutes.

Can the text go behind objects, not just people?

Yes. Sleepy detects the main subject on its own, or you can tell it whether that is a person or an object, like a pet, a product or a car.

Can I choose where the text sits?

Yes. Let Sleepy place the text in the clean parts of each frame, or fix its position, size and angle yourself.

What videos does it work with?

MP4 files up to 150MB, vertical or horizontal, up to 30 seconds, or up to 2 minutes on the Agency plan. The video needs speech for the captions, unless you paste the exact script.

What languages does it support?

Captions are transcribed in the language spoken, and can be translated: pick another caption language and the text comes out in it.

Is it free?

Text behind your subject is part of captions, which come with every paid plan, starting with Starter at $5 a month. You can make motion graphics videos for free before you upgrade.
